Garage Door Panel Replacement in Fort Worth, TX One Section, Not the Whole Door

A single caved-in section can often be swapped without touching the rest of the door. Whether that is the right call comes down to three things: what the door is, whether the section is still made, and how far the finish has drifted.

First, identify the door

Section replacement lives or dies on identification. The information is stamped or printed on a label, usually on the inside of the end stile of one of the middle sections, sometimes on the top section near the opener bracket. What matters is manufacturer, series, panel design, gauge, section height and the exact width. Photograph the label, then photograph the whole door from far enough back to show the panel pattern and the glass layout. A door with a stamped short-panel pattern from one maker will not blend with a visually similar section from another; the stamping depth and the shoulder radius differ enough to catch the eye from the curb. If the label is gone, the hinge pattern, the stile profile and the section height narrow it down, and that identification work is part of the visit. The service list covers the alternative, which is a whole-door order.

Which section is damaged changes the job

A bottom section carries the bottom brackets, the cable anchors and the seal retainer, so replacing it means transferring or renewing that hardware and re-tensioning the cables afterward. It is also the section most likely to be hit by a bumper or standing water. A middle section is the simplest swap, since it only carries hinges and the strut that may be screwed across it. A top section is the awkward one: it holds the top fixtures and, on almost every powered door, the opener arm bracket, and it is the section that has to meet the header evenly or the top seal will not close. Any strut that was across the damaged section goes back, and if the original door never had one on a wide section, that is worth correcting while it is open.

The mismatch nobody warns you about

Two sections of the same part number, one ten years into full southern exposure and one straight from the factory, will not read as the same color. Fort Worth doors face a July normal high of 95.6 degrees and about twenty days a year over 100, and that much ultraviolet exposure chalks a factory finish. On a bottom section the mismatch is often invisible from the street because it sits in shadow behind the driveway apron. On a top section, directly in the sun, it is obvious. This is a judgement worth making out loud before the part is ordered, and the honest options are to accept it, to repaint the full door after the swap with a coating rated for a steel door, or to replace the whole door instead.

Discontinued panels and the lead time

Doors much past fifteen years frequently have no section still in production, and a near-match from a current series will sit differently in the rail. That is the usual reason a section swap becomes a full replacement, and it should be established before anybody quotes the job. Timing matters too. A common section in a common color is a short wait; a specific woodgrain finish, a custom height or a glazed top section is built to order. In the weeks after a Metroplex-wide hail event the queue for door sections lengthens for everyone, which is a real argument for getting the mechanical repairs done immediately and letting the cosmetic part follow.

What gets checked while the door is open

A section replacement is the one visit where the hardware is exposed anyway, so the rest gets looked at: hinge knuckles at every joint, the wheels on the sections either side, the cable at the bottom loop, and the rail where the door was struck. On an impact-damaged door the rail is bent more often than not. Weight is the last item. A replacement section that is heavier or lighter than the original, which happens when an uninsulated door takes an insulated section or the reverse, changes the balance, and the counterbalance has to be adjusted to match instead of left as found. The proof is a hand lift: off the opener, the door should hold where you leave it. Storm-related work is covered further on the storm and wind damage page.

A 1998 median hides a lot of pre-1980 garages

The median Fort Worth housing unit was built in 1998 (ACS 2024 1-year estimate), but roughly a third of the city's 397,600 units predate 1980. Arlington Heights was largely built out in the 1920s, and Wedgwood was developed between the 1950s and the 1970s. Walsh on the far west side did not receive its first homeowners until April 2017.

Why it matters: Post-1990 garages are nearly always sectional steel doors balanced on a single torsion shaft. The 1920s bungalow blocks and the 1950s-70s suburbs frequently have extension springs running along the side rails, sometimes on original one-piece doors, and detached alley garages often have too little headroom for a standard torsion mount. The parts, the tooling and the safe procedure differ, so the build era has to be established before the truck is loaded.

The city treats a garage door as an exterior door

Fort Worth Development Services states on its residential permitting page that replacement or addition of exterior doors, windows or burglar bars requires a building permit, and that permits are required for work that changes, moves or repairs doors, while purely cosmetic remodels are exempt.

Why it matters: A garage door is an exterior door, so installing a new door in Fort Worth is permitted work and the filing belongs in the project timeline. Replacing a torsion spring, a lift cable, a set of rollers or an opener head is hardware service on the existing door rather than a door replacement. Homeowners should confirm their specific scope with Development Services at 817-392-2222 before ordering a door, and expect design review on top of the permit inside the city's historic districts.

After the April hail, the bent track outranks the dent

The National Weather Service Fort Worth/Dallas office documented a multi-day severe weather episode from April 24-29, 2026. Supercells developed along the dryline over the middle of the DFW Metroplex on April 27, with numerous reports of large hail up to teacup size. On April 28, dozens of large hail reports up to softball size accompanied six confirmed tornadoes, including an EF3 with 145 mph winds near Mineral Wells in Palo Pinto and Parker Counties immediately west of Tarrant County.

Why it matters: Hail bruises the door skin, which is cosmetic and can wait for an insurance adjuster, but the damage that stops a door moving is a track pushed out of plumb and a strut bowed across the back of a section. Those keep destroying rollers on every cycle until they are corrected, so a storm-damaged door needs the rails and struts checked rather than the dents counted, and the technician should bring track sections.
