Garage Door Track Replacement in Fort Worth, TX Bent Vertical and Horizontal Rail

Track is the steel rail the door rides in, and it only has to be a quarter inch out of line to start destroying wheels and hinges. Bent rail is also the storm damage nobody calls about, because the dents are easier to see.

The parts people lump together as track

There is a vertical rail bolted to each jamb, a curved radius piece, a horizontal rail running back into the garage, and a rear hanger holding that horizontal run off the ceiling framing. The vertical rail is carried by a flag bracket at the top and jamb brackets down its length, and the whole assembly is only as straight as those brackets. A door that has been shoved out of true rarely needs every piece. What it usually needs is one rail section, a couple of brackets, and the alignment reset across the rest, which is why a measurement matters more than a parts list here. Start from the service index if you are not sure the rail is what failed.

How rail gets bent in Fort Worth

Three ways, in order of frequency. A vehicle catches the vertical rail while backing out, which bends it inward at bumper height and leaves the door binding at the bottom of travel. A door comes down on an obstruction and racks itself, which spreads the rail near the radius. And weather does it: the National Weather Service Fort Worth office documented supercells over the middle of the Metroplex during the April 24 to 29, 2026 outbreak, with hail to teacup size on the 27th and softball reports the following day, and pressure and debris in storms like that push doors and rails out of plumb across whole neighborhoods at once. The city designs to a 105 mph three-second gust under the local amendments to the 2021 residential code, and the rail brackets and jamb fasteners are the hardware that has to hold when a gust loads the largest opening in the wall.

Why small misalignment is expensive

The rail sets the path, and the wheels have nowhere else to go. Pinch the rail and the roller stems bind, so the wheels stop turning and start dragging. Spread the rail and the wheels wander to the edge of the flange, then jump out at the radius. Twist the vertical rail and the door pulls on one hinge line, cracks the hinge knuckles and stretches the bracket holes. Every one of those shows up on the invoice as rollers and hinges, over and over, until the rail is corrected. If you have replaced rollers once already and the noise came straight back, the rail is the reason.

What alignment actually involves

The door gets clamped and the tension stays where it is while the rail is worked. Vertical rails are shimmed and reset to plumb against the jamb, spacing from the door face is set consistently top to bottom, and the horizontal run gets checked for level and for the drop from front to back. Loose lag screws in the jamb brackets are the single most common finding, and in Fort Worth's older detached garages those lags are often in wood that has been wet since the last hailstorm, so the fastener has nothing to bite. That gets addressed as part of the job, not ignored, because a bracket that will not hold torque puts the rail right back where it was.

When the section gets replaced instead

Rail is repairable up to a point. A gentle bow comes back with hand tools and a straightedge. A crease, a kink at a bolt hole, a section that has been straightened once before, or rust that has eaten into the flange are all replacements, and rail is sold in sections so it is a modest part. Radius pieces are less forgiving than straight rail because the curve is the part that has to be exactly right. Rear hangers are replaced whenever they are bent or whenever somebody has hung the horizontal rail off a strapped joist with wire instead of angle iron, which is a common find in garages that have been through a few owners.

Where the storm question comes in

If the door was hit by hail or straight-line wind, the rail check comes before any conversation about the skin. Insurance work on dented panels runs on the adjuster's schedule; a rail out of plumb keeps damaging hardware every time the door cycles, and it is cheap to fix now and expensive to fix after it has taken a section with it. Ask for the rail and the struts to be inspected together after any storm, and read the hail damage page for what an adjuster will want documented. You get a price for the alignment and for any section being replaced before the work starts.

Historic districts review the door before the permit

Fort Worth requires a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit is issued for exterior alterations in its historic districts, and the city lists doors and accessory structures among them. Fairmount, Mistletoe Heights and Elizabeth Boulevard are on that district list.

Why it matters: On the near south side a replacement door is a design review item before it is a parts order, and repairing the original wood often clears faster than replacing it.

A 1998 median hides a lot of pre-1980 garages

The median Fort Worth housing unit was built in 1998 (ACS 2024 1-year estimate), but roughly a third of the city's 397,600 units predate 1980. Arlington Heights was largely built out in the 1920s, and Wedgwood was developed between the 1950s and the 1970s. Walsh on the far west side did not receive its first homeowners until April 2017.

Why it matters: Post-1990 garages are nearly always sectional steel doors balanced on a single torsion shaft. The 1920s bungalow blocks and the 1950s-70s suburbs frequently have extension springs running along the side rails, sometimes on original one-piece doors, and detached alley garages often have too little headroom for a standard torsion mount. The parts, the tooling and the safe procedure differ, so the build era has to be established before the truck is loaded.

The city treats a garage door as an exterior door

Fort Worth Development Services states on its residential permitting page that replacement or addition of exterior doors, windows or burglar bars requires a building permit, and that permits are required for work that changes, moves or repairs doors, while purely cosmetic remodels are exempt.

Why it matters: A garage door is an exterior door, so installing a new door in Fort Worth is permitted work and the filing belongs in the project timeline. Replacing a torsion spring, a lift cable, a set of rollers or an opener head is hardware service on the existing door rather than a door replacement. Homeowners should confirm their specific scope with Development Services at 817-392-2222 before ordering a door, and expect design review on top of the permit inside the city's historic districts.
